Torres del Paine

Torres del Paine

It was finally here: the beast, the event that made planning South America so hard, the reason for our REI registry and huge REI shopping trips. Torres del Paine! Multi-night trips in Torres need to be planned fairly well in advance, because it’s super popular and campsite reservations are mandatory. Thus, we’ve had our trip to the Torres planted as a stake in the ground for quite a while now. We’ll have another post discussing logistics and planning for this…

Penguins and Patagonia

Penguins and Patagonia

To get to the southern-most part of the continent, we hopped a 3 hour flight from Santiago to Punta Arenas. Waiting at the gate, it was obvious based on everyone’s attire that we were all heading south to the national park Torres del Paine. I’ve never seen more ThermoBalls, GoreTex, and hiking shoes outside of an REI. We were amongst peers. Or at least John was. I feel like I’m just posing as an outdoorsy type. We continued to see…

Vino en Valle de Colchagua

Vino en Valle de Colchagua

Hello! I apologize for the long period of silence! We’ve been down in Patagonia, where the free-time has been short and the internet routinely terrible. We’ve made it back to the big city now: we’re in Buenos Aires! But we’ve got a good bit of catching up to do on the blog, so we start with our trip to Colchagua Valley! Vacation to Wine Country We joked that since we’d been in Santiago for so long, and would be going…

Concha y Toro and Santiago

Concha y Toro and Santiago

Well, as we mentioned in our last post, we took a trip just outside Santiago to see the Concha y Toro winery. Check out that post to learn about how we got there, and our… eh… travails doing so. But as I’d said there, we had a lovely time at the winery. Concha y Toro is a huge winery. They’re the largest wine producer in Latin America, and one of the largest in the world. You can find their wines…

¡Con Gas!

¡Con Gas!

“It’s ¡con gas!” Wait a minute. That was the most striking, and most terrifying, part of the day, but I should start from the beginning. The day began like most of our others: slowly, casually, pleasantly. We woke up late (though earlier than recently), we had breakfast and tea. We double checked all the travel plans for the day, and we were definitely in no hurry to get started. We had all day, and visiting the Concha y Toro winery…

Santiago de Chile

Santiago de Chile

Hello from Santiago! After three great nights in Valparaíso, we left for Santiago, which we’d be making our home for at least the next eight nights. We hadn’t spent such a long period of time in one place since Cartagena, so we both were looking forward to settling in a little bit and slowing down. Plus, we have a lovely AirBnb, with a kitchen and a washer, so we have the chance to do some cooking, and to catch up…

Valparaíso, Chile

Valparaíso, Chile

We loved our time in Colombia, and are so happy we started our trip there. But the day came to move on, as we had a flight to continue our adventures in Chile. It probably has something to do with the fact that all days are Saturdays, but that was the easiest 6-hour flight I’ve ever done. And it put me south of the equator for the first time! Look at me go. The ground transportation at Santiago airport was…
