Unexpected Wildlife

For anyone who knows me, I’m notorious for not seeing wildlife when I travel. I’ve warned John of this affliction, and the likelihood that he’ll be the collateral damage in my animal viewing bad luck. But less than a week into our trip, we’ve come across not one but two wild animals without even trying!

Wild Animals in the City?

We were cutting through Parque del Centenario, a nondescript square outside the old walls, when we saw a bunch of gringos staring up into one of the few trees in the park. Certain they were begging to be pick-pocketed, I couldn’t help myself but run over and join them. Up in the tree was a sloth! I’ve never seen one outside of a zoo, and had no clue they were in Colombia, especially outside of the rainforest and in a city. There was also another sloth in the neighboring tree. Such weird looking creatures!

Additionally, we started to see a couple iguanas in the park. One of them was coming out of a tree, so John and his large, fancy camera that screams tourist ran over to grab a picture. As he was trying to focus on the iguana in the tree, one went scurrying across the grass coming within a foot of him before scaling a tree. These guys can run and look prehistoric! The ones we saw up close were easily 3-4 feet long including their tails. We saw many more in the trees including one poor lady iguana who was the recipient of some rough sex that nearly turned into a threesome. Very educational!

Please enjoy the pictures of trees we’ve included that supposedly have sloths and iguanas in them. Where’s Waldo?!

What’s Next?

Our trip to Playa Blanca, subtitled the day Erika got more burnt than John.
